Specialty & Advanced Surgery

When Your Pet Needs Specialized Care

At Jermantown Animal Hospital, we go beyond routine surgical procedures to offer specialized and advanced surgical services for your pet. From complex orthopedic repairs to rare soft-tissue surgeries, we’re equipped to handle cases that require extra expertise. We partner with a board-certified orthopedic surgeon for specialized procedures and offer unique services like canine vasectomies, one of the only clinics in Northern Virginia to do so.

Expert Orthopedic Care

For complex bone and joint conditions, we work with a board-certified veterinary orthopedic surgeon who brings specialized expertise to our facility. Our skilled team provides expert pet orthopedic surgery services to treat a wide range of bone, joint, and ligament conditions. From cruciate ligament repairs to fracture treatment, we use advanced techniques and comprehensive rehabilitation protocols to help your pet regain mobility and return to an active, pain-free life.

It’s not uncommon for dogs, especially older or overweight dogs, to rupture their cranial cruciate ligaments (CCL). These injuries are similar to ACL injuries in humans. When a dog ruptures this ligament, their knee joint becomes unstable, and they limp on the affected limb. Because CCL tears cause significant mobility issues for pets, treating these injuries as quickly as possible is essential. TPLO surgery is considered the gold standard for treating these injuries and offers excellent outcomes for most dogs.

A good post-operative rehabilitation program can be critical to successful pet orthopedic surgery. We provide detailed instructions and physical therapy guidance to promote healing and restore function as quickly as possible. This comprehensive approach ensures that your pet recovers fully and regains optimal mobility.

Canine Vasectomies

We’re proud to be one of the few veterinary practices in Northern Virginia offering canine vasectomies as an alternative to traditional neutering. Why choose a vasectomy for your dog? Some pet owners prefer this option because it allows their dog to maintain natural hormone levels, which can support normal physical development, bone growth, and muscle mass, which is especially important for large breed dogs. Hormones also play a role in behavior and temperament, and some owners prefer vasectomies.

It’s essential to note that vasectomy doesn’t eliminate testosterone-driven behaviors like roaming, mounting, or marking. If those behaviors are a concern, traditional neutering may be a better fit for your family. We’re happy to discuss both options during a consultation to help you decide what’s right for your dog. Advanced Soft-Tissue Surgery

In addition to orthopedic procedures, Jermantown Animal Hospital offers advanced soft-tissue surgeries that require specialized training and precision. Pet soft-tissue surgery encompasses a range of procedures aimed at treating conditions involving the skin, muscles, tendons, and internal organs. Our skilled veterinary surgeons perform surgeries to address conditions such as tumor removal, wound repair, hernia repair, and organ biopsies. We also perform eye enucleations when medically necessary, ensuring your pet’s comfort throughout the process.

We use the latest anesthesia, diagnostics, and pain control protocols, as well as top-of-the-line surgical and monitoring equipment. Every pet is different, and we tailor each pet’s surgery and anesthetic plan to their precise needs and unique factors. Your pet’s safety and comfort are our highest priority.
